Chiropractic for Children

There is a simple but profound expression that says “As the twig is bent, so grows the tree.”

In this simple phrase lies the foundational reason that chiropractic monitoring should begin as early in life as possible.

You may be thinking “how could my child possibly injure their spine or damage their nervous system at such a young age?” Our response is simple – how could they not!

Think about all the stresses and strains kids experience as they grow and develop. The birth process alone can be one of the most traumatic experiences a child goes through, with research highlighting that up to 90% of babies have injuries to their neck at birth. And, since babies can’t tell us what is wrong, most of these injuries go undetected and uncorrected for years, setting the stage for breathing challenges, digestive issues, immune weakness, ear problems, and secondary spinal compensation patterns, to name a few. The necks of infants and toddlers must contend with a rapidly growing head that is disproportional to their body. Not to mention that once they start moving, the average kiddo falls over 4000 times as they learn to walk. Then they are off to school where they sit excessively, wear heavy backpacks, and don’t have adequate gym and recess time. The rise of technology in our lives is absolutely destructive to our spines and nerve systems, with texting, gaming, and TV watching literally creating spinal arthritis in kids as young as 10 years old.

Add to the mix all of the chemical and emotional stress children encounter in their early years and it is literally a miracle their nervous systems work at all!

The website Well Adjusted Babies explains 10 reasons parents take their children to see a chiropractor:

  1. To encourage good neural plasticity (brain and nerve development).
  2. To support their child’s overall health and wellbeing.
  3. To help strengthen their child’s immunity and potentially reduce the incidence of colds, ear-aches and general illness.
  4. To assist with colic and Irritable Baby Syndrome.
  5. To help with asthma, breathing difficulties and allergies.
  6. To encourage good spinal posture.
  7. To help improve their child’s ability to concentrate.
  8. To assist with behavioral disorders.
  9. To help alleviate digestive problems.
  10. To assist with bed-wetting and sleep issues.

We have found that once parents have been informed of all the reasons to have their babies and their children checked by a chiropractor, the only real barrier is the common fear that the actual care itself could somehow hurt their little ones or that is may be too forceful or aggressive. Rest assured, this is something we discuss with you in advance before any care is administered. Our methods are very gentle and require very little force or pressure in order to work. We often use the analogy that checking and adjusting a baby requires no more pressure than you would use to check the ripeness of a tomato! It is that gentle!
